The most common complication following a breast enlargment or –reconstruction is capsular contraction. Polyurethane implants are developed to minimize the capsular contraction risk. The polyurethane foam layer will provoke a reaction of the body: the body will form instead of one big capsule, many microcapsules, which prevent the formation of a capsular contraction. Thanks to the integration of the body’s own tissue in the polyurethane foam layer, rotation or movement of the implant isn’t possible anymore. This has as advantages a lower complication rate and it makes the use of anatomical implants possible. The polyurethane layer is attached to the implant with a special technique, called ‘vulcanizing’, to make sure it can’t detach from the implant. Because of the integration of the own tissue and the very natural feeling gel, polyurethane implants give a very soft and natural result.
The polyurethane difference
In dept studies over the past 20 years have made the development of a classification scale for capsular contraction possible: the Baker classification, in which grade III and IV are considered as disturbing. The risk of capsular contraction using polyurethane is 0-9% compared to 9-50% using other implants. In most studies the risk of capsular contraction using polyurethane is even only 0-3%. Because the body’s tissue integrates in the polyurethane foam layer, there is also no rotation or moving risk, which does exist with the other types of implants.

Polyurethane breast implants are implants made out of a cohesive silicone gel, covered with a layer of polyurethane foam. Cohesive gel can’t leek and keeps its form.
